Vision Statement

The Department of Sociology-Criminology provides programs in Criminology and Social Work enabling students to develop a value based, service-oriented approach to their chosen field of endeavor.

Highlight of Program

The highlight of our program is the opportunity to participate in a year long internship with an agency within the students career field.

Student Learning Outcomes

The Sociology/Criminology/Social Work Department offers courses and programs which aim to:

• Develop the basic conceptual tools, methods and theories necessary to understand social behavior, social groups and society.
• Provide a direct experience working with people that is applicable to and complements careers in law and advocacy, management and personnel, psychology and any of the allied medical/mental health fields.
• Provide an opportunity for students to deepen and practice their commitment to social justice.
• Facilitate students' abilities to work with diverse populations in the public or private sector.
• Prepare students to work with and help people in the Social Work/Criminology Profession, and for graduate study in Social Work, Psychology and Criminology degree programs, Spanish-speaking Social Work, teaching certification and positions, allied health professions and Business degree programs.

Sociology Majors: Please note that there are sections of this site that can help guide you, such as the section on Department Policies. Here, you can learn which options you have with distribution requirements or how to obtain an independent study, what to do if interested in taking summer courses, or what is expected of you in Sociology classes or where to go if you need assistance. Our section on Advisement can prepare you for your semester meetings with your Faculty Advisor with whom you meet twice a year. Most Sociology courses are web-enhanced. And several of the required courses are offered both online and in the classroom.
