The Department of Fashion-Family and Consumer Sciences has prepared professionals in the field of education for the past seventy-five years. Education for careers in fashion merchandising was added to the curriculum over twenty-five years ago. An experienced faculty together with a network of Immaculata University graduates provide educational experiences both in the classroom and in the work environment.

Fashion Merchandising

Fashion Merchandising is a diverse field offering a variety of opportunities along with many different career paths. The potential for advancement is great for students who are creative, intelligent, highly motivated, and eager to succeed. Immaculata University seeks to provide students with a background in fashion, business and liberal arts. Businesses in the surrounding communities support the program by employing students, thereby affording them opportunities to obtain first-hand experience in the field of retailing.

Fashion Merchandising students complete a field experience during the spring of their senior year. To fulfill the field experience requirement, students complete 90 hours of practical work experience and two courses (FMD 337 and FMD 338). Recent field experience placements include Macy's.com, QVC, JC Penney, Showroom Seven, GAP, Anthropologie, Posh and Nordstrom.

Family and Consumer Sciences

The demand for Family and Consumer Science teachers is greater than the supply of undergraduates prepared to enter the field. The country faces a challenge because of the decline in professionals entering the field, early retirements, and the increase in the number of required classes, especially in the state of Pennsylvania. Immaculata is one of the few schools offering this program.

Immaculata's program offers courses in consumer economics, nutrition, foods, clothing and textiles, human development, personal and family resource management, and interior design. Students also take courses necessary to apply for teacher certification.

Immaculata University is a Catholic, comprehensive, coeducational institution founded by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
